About Kevin

My name is Kevin Bourne. I am a freelance writer, blogger and sometimes poet living in Ottawa, Canada. Let me tell you a bit more about myself.

I enjoy everything from city-building and local government to sports and entrepreneurship. I was born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) prior to moving to Ottawa. Although born in Canada I've held dual citizenship with Barbados, my country of ancestry, for the past 16 years. This has led to a deep interest in Caribbean issues.

In Toronto I owned and operated a consulting firm helping small businesses and non-profits with a variety of communications materials including policies & procedures, borchures, policy briefs and marketing materials where I developed my business writing skills. As an spin off of my business I founded, published, edited and wrote in a publication called AT (Administration Today) providing professionals and business owners manage their work better.

Prior to moving to Ottawa I worked as a Bilingual Court Reporter & Transcriber in Superior and Ontario courts where I learned about legal writing. I travelled all over South-Western Ontario working in anglophone and francophone communities and regularly produced transcipts in English and French.

After moving to the Capital I interned as a Communications & Operations Assistant to an MP on Parliament Hill.  In this capacity I not only practically developed my government writing skills but I attended government trainings in writing and communications.

Studying in the French Immersion program starting at five years old paved the way for me to attend, Glendon College, the bilingual campus of York University. In 2007 I graduated with a BA in Political Science and a Bilingual Certificate in Public Administration & Policy. My post-secondary education exposed me to research & analysis and essay writing in both English and French.

Aside from volunteering as a camera operator at RogersTV Ottawa, I am now the Canada Correspondent for CityMayors.com and a blogger with Open File Ottawa and Reinventing Ottawa, writing about urban and municipal issues in Ottawa and Canada.
